Long Line Training for everyday adventures
Get confident with long line handling & enjoy lower stress city adventures
Is letting your dog off lead a total gamble?

- Patchy recall
- Puppy chaos
- Street treat foraging
- Runs off at on lead time
- Teenage selective hearing
- Gets easily distracted
- Acts like your strangers
- Wildlife chasing
Sound familiar?
You finally escape your morning of zoom meetings for a well earned lunchtime walk. Your dog is raring to go, and you're looking forward to the break in your day.
You unclip their lead, expecting them to have a good sniff and stretch their legs. Instead, they disappear into the woods. By the time you catch up, they've got their head in a bush eating something questionable, and they've conveniently forgotten their recall cue... again.
When you try to get them back, they manage to stay just out of reach, turning it into a game of keep away where they seem to be having way more fun than you are.
There's a better way to explore the city together.
In our Long Line Adventure Sessions I’ll show you how to use an Ear to the Hound biothane long line to give your dog the freedom and adventure they crave (without the headaches) right here in London.

Long Line Training FAQs
What is a long line?
A long line is like a normal dog lead, but longer. I design and make long lines made from biothane which is strong webbing with a flexible PVC coating. This makes them waterproof, stink proof and durable. Our long lines start at 5 metres, giving your dog space to explore while keeping them safe.
Do long lines get tangled?
They shouldn’t! Once you’ve learnt the safe way to hold your long line and control the length, it’s all about practice and getting comfortable with using your long line in different situations. These are the skills we’ll guide you through in the Long Line Adventure sessions.
Are long lines good for puppies?
If I could recommend one thing to make walking and training your puppy less stressful it would be a long line! Puppies have a bunch of energy, no sense of self preservation and they need to move their bodies freely. Learning how to use a long line can help them experience the world safely, while you keep your sanity.
Does my dog need to wear a harness with a long line?
Yes, your dog needs to wear a well fitting Y shape harness with a back clip to use a long line safely. If your dog wears a collar with the extra length of a long line compared to a standard lead, stopping suddenly puts a lot of strain on your dog's neck and back which can hurt them.
Are long lines okay to use with reactive dogs?
Definitely! We find that most dogs, including reactive dogs, feel more relaxed and curious when they are able to experience the world on a long line. Having extra space and teaching them to choose to move away from triggers helps them feel less anxious. Building solid handling skills like you'll learn in the Long Line Adventure Sessions is super important when using a long line with a reactive dog.
Will using a long line improve my dogs recall?
Yes, long lines can help build better recall. A key part of training is preventing your dog from rehearsing stuff you don’t want, this is called management. Whether your dog is a puppy that's still learning recall or an adult dog who forgets who they came to the park with, using a long line stops your dog practicing stuff like chasing joggers or stealing footballs, while they still enjoy proper exercise and freedom.
Should I use a long line with my rescue dog?
I love teaching dog owners to use long lines with rescue dogs. When you first adopt your dog you’re still getting to know each other, which skills your dog has, and what can have them sprinting to the other side of the park! Using a long line keeps them safe, while giving them space to sniff, explore and practice skills like check-ins and recall.
Can I learn how to use a long line from a video?
That's one way to learn. Our sessions are designed for London dog owners who want to learn to use a long line in a fun, hands-on and interactive way. Our in person training gives you feedback and tips for the real skills you’ll need to use a long line with your dog. You can ask questions and practice together to help you feel more confident when you and your dog go it alone.
Not sure if long line training is right for you and your hound?
Let's chat! Our Discovery Chats are a free 20 minute video call where you can ask questions, and get advice on whether the training option you're thinking about is right for your hound.
There's no sales pitch or obligation to sign up to training, it's just the simplest way to get to know each other and recommend whats best for you and your dog.
