Dog Training FAQs
Is it too late to train my adult dog?
Never! Even old dogs can learn new tricks. And by tricks, I mean real life skills that help them handle their big feelings and navigate the world more easily. I’ve worked with senior dogs who’d had very little training, and by the end of our sessions they’re greeting me at the door, keen to train and focusing on their humans out on walks in a way their owners hadn’t seen before.
During our 90 minute deep dive, I’ll get to know you, your dog and what’s really going on, so we can build a training plan around what you both need. It’s never too late to make life together easier.
How long will it take to train my dog?
I would love to give you a definitive answer, but unfortunately the truth is: it depends!
Your dog's behaviour is shaped by a unique combination of genetics, environment, physiology and their previous experiences. So I can't guarantee how long training will take or exactly what the final outcome will look like.
What I can promise is personalised support when you need it, a sense of humour when the sh!t hits the fan, practical skills for everyday life, and a plan to make life with your dog easier and more enjoyable.
My dog has big feelings about other dogs - can you help?
This is one of the most common things people come to me for, it's especially tricky for city dogs. Other dogs are everywhere, and they can’t always say hello. Even off lead, a busy London park can mean lots of dogs, lots of excitement and little space to decompress.
I know what it’s like to be the person holding the lead while your dog has a meltdown, it can feel really embarrassing!
We’ll get to grips with what’s driving their behaviour and use a combination of management and practical training. Whether your dog has serious FOMO and wants to greet every dog they see, or reacts to dogs by barking or lunging, I can help you build the skills to navigate these situations with confidence.
Will I need to use treats to train my reactive dog?
Yes… and no! I use food a lot in training because it’s easy to deliver, highly reinforcing and, for many behaviours, it works brilliantly. But food is only one part of the picture.
We also need to look at what happens before the behaviour: what your dog is feeling in that moment, what's going on around them and what else is happening in their lives. Change those circumstances and you can change what your dog expects to happen and what they’re able to do.
You’ll learn how to use food as part of your training, so if the idea of carrying a treat pouch on walks is a hard no, I might not be the trainer for you!
Why does my dog behave at home but lose their mind outside?
If this is your dog, you’re not alone! I hear this from owners all the time. I get it, it’s frustrating when your dog can do something at home, but when it really matters, they just can’t seem to manage it. Think of it this way: you wouldn’t teach a kid to swim by throwing them in at the deep end. You’d start in the shallow end, with a float, and gradually build their skills and confidence before introducing deeper water.
Dog training works the same way. We build skills in manageable situations, then gradually add distractions as your dog is ready. Exactly what that looks like will be different for every dog, which is why your training plan is tailored to you and your dog.
Can you help my dog cope with London life?
London life can be a lot, and that’s speaking as a human who mostly has control over where I go and when! I’ll help you understand your dog’s behaviour and body language, so you can spot when they’re finding things a bit much, before it all spills over. You’ll learn practical skills to help your dog make space, regulate their big feelings and feel more comfortable navigating the things they find difficult.
The goal isn’t to make your dog tolerate everything London throws at them. It’s to help you both feel more confident out and about together.
What happens in an Hound About Town training session?
We first start with a one-off 90 minute deep dive session at your home (or online if your dog is uncomfortable with new people), where we’ll look at your dog’s history, behaviour and your goals. This means I can understand what’s really going on and create a plan that works for you and your dog.
Follow up training sessions are 60 minutes, and I come to your home or local area. We’ll work on practical skills for real life, help you understand your dog’s behaviour and give you clear steps to keep things moving between sessions. You’ll also have WhatsApp support between sessions for tips, advice and those inevitable ‘oh sh!t’ moments.
